The Next Web (TNW), a website dedicated to keeping abreast with upcoming technologies, has identified an Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) patent application as one of the top 5 in a recent 3 month period. This article and another on the Patent Yogi website highlight how the AFRL invention can help slow the spread of misinformation through “fake news” that can have critical ramifications, even costing lives.
The CAESAR Group recognizes the need to identify and discredit “fake news” and its purveyors, particularly on the part of the US government and military, and is thus helping foster and promote a technology that is designed to do precisely that.
The technology being developed by AFRL uses machine learning to identify dubious tweets and suspicious Twitter users. Originally it was conceived to combat the threats to Operational Security (OPSEC) – military parlance for due discretion – posed by the social media usage of airmen. However, the invention has now caught the attention of some in the broader user community who see the invention’s wider utility.
The article linked below was posted just last month on the The Next Web. The author is a licensed patent practitioner with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and happens to be the founder of Patent Yogi, a patent services firm. The article highlights the five most interesting patent assets out of the more than 27,454 patents and 29,731 patent applications published over a three-month period. Not only does the AFRL technology make the list-of-five, it is among rarefied company: the other outfits are Google, MIT, and Amazon (Amazon having two inventions noted).
